» Communications
Cruiser Safaris Ltd equips all its safari vehicles with two way radios so that the drivers can communicate with our base, each other and lodges. Most hotels and lodges also have telephones; however, their surcharge rates are quite high. Telephone directories will list all the international dialling codes. Both local and long distance calls are metered on a time basis. All major hotels also have fax machines and internet services at the disposal of their guests. Roaming mobile communication is available throughout most of East Africa. Postal services are fairly well organised and there should be no problems in sending or receiving letters.

» Tipping
A tip of 10% for good service is adequate. Service charges are frequently added to your bills. It is common to tip a tour driver/guide at least US$5–10 for a day.

Travel Tips
East Africa is the original safari destination. It has a wide range of cultures, wildlife and contrasting landscapes from the snow capped mountains to the vast savannah plains complete with a tropical coastline.
Language
The national language of Kenya and Tanzania is Kiswahili. However, English is widely spoken and understood across the country.
Climate
Being equatorial, Kenya and Tanzania has little variation in temperature all year round. There are mainly two rainy seasons – the long rains coming in April/May and the short rains coming in November/December, although this has varied from time to time in the past few years. Inland areas are comfortably warm and dry with temperatures dropping at night and as altitudes climb. Coastal regions are hot and humid.
Health

Advice on vaccination requirements for Kenya and Tanzania should be obtained from your doctor or health authority as they are best qualified in this area. Anti-malaria medication is strongly recommended. Clients are also recommended to arrange personal travel insurance to cover their medical, property and other personal risks for the duration of their stay.   Cruiser Safaris Ltd provides cover for each passenger by the African Air Rescue Service for air and road ambulance rescue only, in case of any emergency. Medical facilities in major cities are well staffed and modern.

Time Difference
Throughout the year, Standard Time in Kenya and Tanzania is three hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, two hours ahead of Central European Winter Time and eight hours ahead of Eastern Standard Winter Time in the US.

Visas
Visas can be obtained at the airport on arrival. The fee is US$50 per person for a single entry visa valid for 3 months payable in cash. Visa application requirements are:

» Valid Passport – valid for 3 months from    date of entry
» Completed application form (available on    airplane and airport)
» 1 passport size photo
» Holiday Itinerary which we will provide.
Electricity
Power supply is at the UK standard voltage of 220/240 and the power sockets are the UK square 3 pin type. On safari, power in most lodges is generator based.
Currency and Exchange
The local unit of currency for Kenya and Tanzania is the Kenya Shilling and Tanzania Shilling respectively which is freely convertible within each country for the US$, Sterling £, Euros, and other currencies. There are numerous banks and bureaux de change in the main towns and most hotels and lodges will exchange currency or travellers cheques. However, most items and services are priced and paid for in US$, so there is no need to convert more funds into local currency than what you need for incidental expenses.

Most Credit Cards are accepted at an increasing number of establishments. But, it is not possible to obtain cash on a credit card, and so tourists are recommended to carry sufficient funds in the form of travellers cheques.
